Tailored Toppers
From fitted trousers to sleek suiting, tailoring is the It trend you’ll see everywhere this season—and outerwear is no exception. The cold-weather embodiment of quiet luxury, winter’s smart toppers take shape in a range of silhouettes: structured blazers from Anine Bing, lapeled coats from WARDROBE.NYC, and long-lined trenches from Favorite Daughter. When it comes to styling tailored outerwear, the options are endless: “Pair a sleek wool coat back to relaxed trousers or a mini dress for a polished look. Straight-leg denim and a chunky knit are always winners, too” says Shopbop Associate Fashion Director Kate Johanson.
Shearling Coats
Undeniably classic (and supremely cozy), shearling styles have true staying power—and for good reason. Not only are these toasty toppers the sartorial equivalent of a warm blanket, they’re also ultra-versatile. Lean into the vintage-inspired vibes of a faux fur coat with a printed midi dress & knee-high boots. Or, “throw a fuzzy cropped jacket over slouchy denim and moto boots for an edged-up take”, suggests Johanson. However you choose to snuggle up in shearling, textured outerwear is a favorite for Johanson, who lists Isabel Marant, Saks Potts and BAUM UND PFERDGARTEN as brands to add to your winter jacket lineup.
③
Tweed Jackets
Meet the fashion set’s outerwear staple: understated-luxe tweed jacket. Made iconic by their collarless silhouettes, woven textures and classic metallic details, the quintessentially ‘80s style is seeing a major revival. “Whether paired with ankle-skimming denim and ballet flats, or a maxi skirt and sleek boots, nothing is chicer than a button-up bouclé jacket”, says Johanson. If you’re looking to add one to your closet, she deems Nili Lotan and Veronica Beard as the names doing tweed toppers best.
Aviator Jackets
Just landed: cozy-chic bomber jackets. Originally designed to keep pilots feeling warm in flight, today’s shearling-lined, zip-front leather jackets uphold their reputation for beating the chill while looking cool. Johanson says the key to styling the trending silhouette is proportion play: “Worn extra slouchy, an oversized aviator jacket looks so effortless—just pair it with a mini skirt and a sleek knee-high boot.” For perfectly executed oversized versions of the season’s must-have topper, look to Acne Studios and Tibi.

Puffer Coats
When temps really dip, it’s time to break out the quilted parkas. These water resistant winter jackets are nonnegotiable for beating the chill, whatever’s on your winter agenda. “From running errands in sweats or hitting the slopes in a full ski ensemble, these puffers have you covered—literally,” says Johanson. Brightly colored options or sequined styles (a.k.a. the ultimate party puffer) from Shoreditch Ski Club have the power to melt a cold-weather style freeze, but you can never go wrong with a classic—Johanson loves insulated black puffer jackets from Parajumpers.
