Sleek & Chic

In 2023, we’re transitioning away from romantic, frilly styles toward more minimal, clean lines—and they are just as standout as their maximalist predecessors. Shopbop Associate Fashion Director Kate Johanson says to keep an eye out for “elevated beach looks with moody color palettes like maroon, burgundy & black, cool cutouts, long sleeves (a.k.a rashies), elevated hardware, and ruched & twisted details.” Fun details like contrast piping and exposed zippers are also trending. Inclusive of both two-piece sets and one-piece swimsuits, these cool, unexpected styles prove that minimalist swim is anything but boring.

Haute Halters

The Y2K throwback trend is still going strong, so you might want to swap out your asymmetrical one-shoulder tops of 2022 for the popular halter tops of 2023. “A halter neckline is a nice nod to the early aughts going-out tops we all loved, but also serves a purpose—making the neck adjustable,” says Johanson. Modern but with a retro feel, Shopbop Fashion Director Caroline Maguire is seeing the halter style making a comeback in one-piece swimsuits, tankinis, and bikini sets. To further complete the retro look, seek out suits in vintage-inspired prints including florals and checks.

Tie It Together

Strings, strings, and more strings! “Stringy bikinis feel youthful and adaptable,” says Johanson. Instead of the ruffled look that ruled 2022, she predicts interesting fabrics like ribbing, terry, and broderie anglaise will add texture to this year’s swimwear. Think: thin, dainty straps on swim tops, bottoms, and full-piece suits, in both high-waisted and low-rise fits. Flattering for every body type, swim styles with ties are comfortable—and cute—whether you’re sitting on the beach, lounging poolside, and even taking part in water activities (surfing, anyone?). No matter your plans, the classic string bikini is having a much-deserved moment.

Matchy Matchy

According to Maguire, matching your cover up and makeup to your bathing suit color is among 2023’s buzziest swim trends. What’s more put-together than a red ‘kini and matching red lip for lounging poolside? If you’re not a makeup fan, don’t worry: You can also coordinate your bikini bottoms and top with your cover up and accessories. “Whether it’s a cabana set (shorts and a button down) or a skirt and shirt, this head-to-toe look goes way beyond the beach,” Johanson says. Meaning? “Endless style potential.”

Cool Crochet

One of 2023’s new swimwear trends isn’t just for the beach: crochet tops and bottoms not only look great on all bodies, but make statements on their own. “From macramé trims to fully knit one-pieces, these crafty pieces are timeless and can be worn season after season,” Johanson says. She recommends a crochet suit to elevate otherwise simple cover ups (bonus: they function as built-in air conditioning, cooling you off during especially hot days). Plus, crochet comes in color-blocked prints, multi-colored, one-color, and tie-dye this year… meaning, there’s a woven wonder for every beach style.
