Find a similar style from your wardrobe that fits you just right. To take measurements, lay the garment down on a flat surface without stretching the fabric.

Measure across the garment at the natural waist and double the measurement.
Rise
Measure from the middle of the waistband to where the inseams (legs) meet.

I have never owned a pair of denim shorts, because I have always struggled to find ones that provide adequate coverage in the back without becoming boardshort-y. If you're like me TRY THESE. The fringe provides a little extra length, and they are otherwise very flattering and quite comfortable.
I am 5'7", 130lb athletic build with some junk in the trunk. My best-fitting jeans (Madewell) are a 24 but sized up to a 26 in these (24, I couldn't bend over to tie my shoes; 25 was great in the waist but too tight in the thigh -- I'm an ex-rower, and am apparently forever #blessed with power quads). Slightly frustrating that there is a big difference between the 25 and 26, but I plan to stick these in the dryer for a few mins the first time I wash them and hope that will bring them down a half size. Overall, highly recommend!

Perfection
I'm 5'3" with thicker thighs and these shorts are perfection. I'm a big fan of levi's and Free People cutoffs and bit the bullet and bought these during the sale. 100% worth it. They fit so well and are the perfect length. Not too long, but not butt cheek territory. Best part - they don't ride up! Worth every penny.

huge, size down!
I typically hate high-waisted pants / shorts of any kind, but these shorts made me a convert! I love the 100% cotton fabric too - they may feel "rigid" at first for those that are used to thin or super stretchy denim material but the cotton gives the shorts some structure and mold to your body very well after a couple wears. Size down though - I went one size down and I could have taken another size down because I still had a little waist gap but I don't want them super tight in the legs. At very least, try them - the hype is real

My favorite shorts
I have had my agolde shorts for about a month now, and they are amazing! I bought them way too big, but after one time in the dryer, they shrank and fit me perfectly! The color is true to the photos and they are more straight fitting than some of my other shorts, so I usually wear a belt with them. They are a nice length and are not too short, but still short enough for my liking. Overall I would highly recommend buying these shorts, just size down!

Perfect Shorts!
I am normally a size 26 in jeans/ shorts however after reading a ton of reviews I sized down to a 25. SO happy I did. They're still a bit loose and I probably could have sized down again but I feel like the 25 provided the perfect amount of looseness and comfort for me. They're the perfect length, short enough but still covered everything and super flattering. I feel like they're worth the price!

These shorts are perfect. I am a ruler shape. I wear a 25/26 in most jeans and ordered a 26 in these as well. They are on the large side, but not in a bad way. Because I am ruler shaped with not much in the way of hips or butt, these are loose through these areas but not in a sloppy way. I wouldn't size down.

Strange fit
I usually love the fit of AG denim but these shorts fit very strange. It didn't look anything like on the model on myself. The waist was perfect but the leg hole openings seemed too wide and gaping..like I was wearing wide legged shorts (my thighs are average sized). Oh and it made my rear look flatter than ever too so if yours is on the smaller side.. maybe avoid these. Ugh..so disappointing given how much bloggers have been hyping these up. Was really hoping they'd live it to it for the price. These are going back.
